Last week Redspective met up with the ever-energetic CEO from B EAST magazine, as he was in town to spin some tunes at a Hollywood-Bollywood party on one of the islands. As you well know, Both B EAST and Redspective have moved around a bit in recent times, and it was wonderful to catch a breath together again. All looking good for a future collaboration between Redspective and B EAST in upcoming issues – and we are delighted to report that upcoming issues are more than a rumour! As soon as the new Redspective ONLINESHOP is launched (see end September, if Russian systems play fair) we will chase up some of those old B EAST copies, and aim to always keep them available for avid readers. Congratulations to us! We have just secured our new space for the new Redspective showroom and mini studio – and renovation starts today! Our soon to be magic new showroom is located in an old St Petersburg red-brick mid-19th-century factory, which formerly produced paper and notebooks. Our neighbours include several other arty-culture folks, and will soon also include the Delonatelo Showroom & a new work station for the St Petersburg graphics group Mediamama. Looking forward with much delight.

THE REDSPECTIVE PRIZE @ GRAFFFEST 2011 Spb

Winner of the GRAFFFEST 2011 graffiti photo competition – according to Redspective – is ADNO! Redspective awarded the ADNO pic below as “MOST HYPNOTISING” - in fact we liked all of Adno’s images, particularly his use of the iconic Russian sailors T-shirt. You can see all of Adno’s submitted street works below – as well as the prize itself – which is a hand-printed certificate, 100Euro prize money, and an invitation to provide an image for Redspective’s 2012 Summer collection. Adno’s certificate was silk-screen printed on old Russian ledger paper, and contained in a matching cotton bag. Both items were prepared by Delonatelo (our beloved print studio). The main topic of the forum is “the synthesis of street and digital art, as one of the most important trends in the development of contemporary street art. Graffiti and Street Art in general, as one of the most progressive trends in contemporary art, have an absolute influence on other genres in their turn using their artistic methods. In line with this latest trend focuses Art Forum will be devoted to the synthesis of graffiti and other forms of modern art: animation, film, photography and digital art.”

GRAFFFEST 2011 Spb – Street Jam & Palace Bridge Animation

The grand finale of the 2011 GRAFFFEST festival was the STREET JAM at the Palace Bridge in St Petersburg! The video “mash up” by Evan Roth and festival participants, as well as the “graffiti-video’s” from the animation competition were on display on the open bridge from 1am. The street jam presentation represents the festivals amalgamation of “graffiti” and “digital”. Link to Grafffest : http://grafffest.ru/

The International Art Forums GRAFFFEST this year has the primary focus : “the synthesis of street and digital art, as one of the most important trends in the development of contemporary street art. Graffiti and Street Art in general, as one of the most progressive trends in contemporary art, have an absolute influence on other genres in their turn using their artistic methods. In line with this latest trend focuses Art Forum will be devoted to the synthesis of graffiti and other forms of modern art: animation, film, photography and digital art.”

Artists participating in the animated video competition were : Oleg Kulik, Hermes Zaygott, Dennis Hooks (Russia), Sam3 (Spain), Yuval Nathan (Israel), Sjors Vervoort (Netherlands), Zarno (France), Danijel Zezelj (USA), David Neal (UK), Olga and Tatiana Poliektovy (Russia), Libor Pixa (Czech Republic), Dirk Koy (Switzerland), Leonard Cohen (France), Tochka (Japan), Broken Fingaz (Israel)

The award for best animated film created in the style of graffiti and street art went to GRAFFITIGR (Libor Pixa/Czech republic/2010). This witty and slightly melancholy animated short film tells the story of a lone hand-drawn character – the graffiti-Tiger – who lives on the walls and the facades of buildings in Prague.

GRAFFFEST 2011 Spb – Evan Roth Lecture

For the first time, St. Petersburg hosted an International Art Forum: GRAFFFEST 2011. The chief guest of the festival was EVAN ROTH from the US of A, (although now based in Paris). Evan is the founder of the international Graffiti Resarch Lab and created a “digital graffiti flow”, allowing for mark free light tracing on walls, plus the hardware/software package “The EyeWriter”. Evan’s lecture at Grafffest talked about harnessing inspiration, whether destructive or constructive, and using “minimal amount of work to maximum effect” (the lazy M.F. effect?) to put these into play. GRAFFFEST 2011 Spb – The St Petersburg Wall

This summer the International Art Forum presented GRAFFFEST 2011, with a strong focus on graffiti aspects in combination with video art or animation. One part of the 5 day festival covers a traditional urban wall painting by celebrated St Petersburg graffiti artists, which culminated on 20th August with the “St Petersburg Wall”. Artists involved in the wall painting are: Igor Yanovsky, Incubus Project, Stas Bags, Eazy haze, Folmer, Stas Jimer, Eugene Pacer, Pasha Roof, Maxim mediocrity, Sasha Trun, Alexander Premium (Uzi) Vdovin, Yeka Hasky and Maxim Ima.

At the stunning ROA EXHIBITION – SKALITZERS Berlin

Redspective was rather delighted that Skalitzers had perfectly timed their AWESOME ROA exhibition whilst we were in Berlin for the Bright and B&B shows – and what an exhibition ! ROA delivered in his mesmerising way, true to his stunning style, an exhibition that knocked your socks off. I couldn’t help notice a little of “Peter th’ Greats kunstkamera” eccentricities in ROA’s work… none-the-less always be sure to check out his exhibitions, if you are in the right place at the right time – and be sure pick up one of his new books too (we did!). BRIGHT Streetwear Festival BERLIN 2011 !!

Rocking up to Bright each season is always a thrill for Redspective – to see our favourite street wear labels presenting the upcoming collections. Also a thrill to discover new East European artists and designers playing with the big guys! Its been a whole year since Redspective last presented at Bright, and we are hoping with all the progress we see at the Stassi House location in Berlin, that Redspective will join Bright again in the future and again showcase the wonderful urban art and design talent from the East.

Bright is one of the official urban, skate, street wear trade shows in Europe, and this season also featured a giant skate park, BBQ and exhibition space. Weblink to Bright : brighttradeshow.com

Vector artist Anton Ramirez opened a new exhibition this week at the exclusive cafe-bar Dom Beat in St Petersburg! In this exhibition Anton presents original artworks in the clean edge graphic style akin to his T-Show T-shirt collections. Also featured at the exhibition is a large mural painted in the building courtyard. FACES & LACES Moscow 2011

An absolute pleasure to return to Faces & Laces Moscow this year! The festival most certainly has quadrupled in size since we visited last, and was housed in the beautiful “behind the Tsum” Center. Four floors of top-notch streetwear brands, interactive displays, games, and urban art – it is clear that Faces&Laces is fast becoming the premium streetwear tradeshow/festival internationally – even though its visitors are still 99% Russian.

Actually, part of Faces&Laces success has to be the free entry to anyone who is anyone interested! Meaning the door is open to all skate, street, and urban culture enthusiasts, rather than only industry “hangers on”, as with other major fashion tradeshows.

Awesome also to see a grand collection of Russian and CIS independent labels on the floor! Here’s hoping more will be seen in the short future. Link to Faces&Laces: http://faceslaces.com/

Urban artists The Incubus Project opened a new exhibition this week at Loft Project Etage, St Petersburg! In this exhibition you can see new developments in Incubus Projects style, with greater focus on industrial images on recycled materials. Featured at the exhibition are Cotton Bags hand silk-screen printed by our partners, Delonatelo, with an iconic Incubus Project industrial image.
